Our History
Now, more than ever, Bank of Edmonson County continues to operate along the same basis it was founded upon in 1925: "Friends helping friends." As Edmonson County's locally-owned bank, Bank of Edmonson County remains a staple in the community, being a friend, advocate, and consistent employment provider. Throughout neighborhoods of our county, you will see the faces of the dependable and visible employees of our business. These are individuals committed to adhering to the same values and work ethic that formed the foundation of this institution.
From the first day of business on October 5, 1925 through today, Bank of Edmonson County has grown from a $15,000 entity to a $145,000,000 enterprise. This has been accomplished by following the plan of its five original stockholders: Jesse T. Alexander, his brothers Luther F. Alexander and David W. Alexander, George W. Woodcock, and N.E. (Ed) Vincent. Also the bank's initial Board of Directors, these five gentlemen cultivated such levels of respect and confidence from their fellow citizens that their dream in organizing the "new bank" in Edmonson County became a prospering reality.
Despite the lean years of "The Great Depression", the bank pressed onward. In 1933, it became a member of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. Bank of Edmonson County reached the status of a $1,000,000 bank in 1954, and grew another $1,000,000 over the next ten years. By June of 1971, Bank of Edmonson County had moved into its current facility on the south side of Brownsville's public square. The new building welcomed new levels of success as well, for within six years the bank had reached the $10,000,000 mark in assets. Throughout the remainder of the 1970s and through the 1980s, economic prosperity and rapid growth pushed the bank past $50,000,000 in total assets.
In 1989, Bank of Edmonson County completed its first expansion to the current building, which added five offices to one wing of the bank. As the successful decade of the 1990s drew to a close and a new millennium began, the bank had grown from a $54,000,000 bank in 1990 to $124,000,000 operation.
As before, with growth came the realization that additional spaces was necessary. Thus, in 2001, Bank of Edmonson County finished its second expansion to the current facility. This time, it added eight new offices, a second conference room, handicapped-accessible restrooms on each floor, additional storage space, and an elevator. Today, as a $165,000,000 organization with a variety of services to offer our customers, we feel we are equipped to offer the best customer service in the finest facility possible. While we are as large as we've ever been, we feel we are the best we've ever been. Perhaps bigger is indeed better.
Today, we remain a proud, but grounded organization. Although we are the largest community bank in the Edmonson, Grayson, and Butler tri-county area, we are still one close-knit family. Under the management of the original five founder's heirs, today's officers, directors, and stockholders are proud of the heritage behind our financial institution. They encourage the growth we experience, and empower the staff of 50 individuals to provide friendly, efficient, and outstanding customer service. The commitment at Bank of Edmonson County to be an organization of "friends helping friends" has never been stronger. Our customers and our community will always be the first priority.
